Do these things ever come up for sale at auctions?

Yes. But I believe they remove the armor kits that one has. Anyway, here’s a bunch: http://www.govplanet.com/Humvees IIRC they are cheap to buy but it takes some work to get them registered for road use and running well.

Haha nice. Who hasn’t dreamt about having one of these when they were a kid (or still now)?

I design armor for a living. (Well for another few weeks, then I’m switching over to the side that designs the things the armor tries to stop.) If you buy a humvee and need tips let me know.

The MRE box, water, and fuel can s would lead me to believe that it’s still a military vehicle. Was the driver and passenger wearing helmets by chance?

Oh, it was a decent sized convoy, about ten of these following a tan one with a ton of antennas. National guard or army I’m assuming, they were all uniformed

They’re a terrible vehicle with armor on them. Beyond the overall size limiting where you can take one (great for open deserts, not going to take one up old mining trails in the mountains), these trucks more than doubled their empty wight over the years. The original models with a naturally aspirated 6.2, 3 speed auto and no A/C weighed something like 6k. I spent some time driving these, and they were impressive wherever they fit off road, but the 3 speed made them miserable above 40 mph.
When I got out my unit had the latest and greatest up-armored trucks made in 2011ish that weighed something like 11.5k emtpy on same chassis. While they had the bigger 6.5 turbo, overdrive, A/C and all kinds of fun stuff inside, at that weight my experience as a driver was that they were only slightly more capable than a Tahoe with a 4-6" lift kit on them (and with considerably less interior room). They were terrible in mud and damned near useless in that sand without airing the tires down to nothing. When you came to a stop, they continued rocking back and fourth for a couple of seconds. If you stopped on more than a mild side slope, it took two Marines to open a door on the uphill side. They also got about half the fuel mileage of a non up-armored, and they were stunningly slow to drive. The platform was never intended to be used like the later ones are, and they are severely compromised vehicles. For my money, I want either a British land rover sized truck to move fast and actually be able to drive up more than open country, or I want an MRAP or other medium-duty truck based chassis vehicle that was actually designed to handle the weight of an armored vehicle.

They auction for pretty cheap, but technically you can’t register them.

I seem to recall jalopnik articles detailing the long, drawn-out process for registration. Too much work for my liking. I’ll stick to sporty cars and maybe grab an overlanding rig in a few years...

Yeah I think they’re one of those “better to enjoy from the outside” kind of things...
Thanks for sharing though, I never would have guessed the doors were that heavy

We’ve done some design studies and simulations, but haven’t built/tested anything. Historically the West hasn’t been all that interested in actually fielding it with the exception of Israel (if we consider it Western).
